In reality, there are at least three definitions of a watchmaker. First, there is the manufacturer, who actually makes watch movements and components. They may complete the watches themselves and sell them or they may sell the components to the next type of watchmaker. Second, some watchmakers assemble the movements and components purchased from the manufacturer. They may sell these watches under their own brand or they may sell them to a retailer. The third type of “watchmaker”, is the retailer who buys a completed watch from a manufacturer or assembler of watches and sells them under their own brand name.
